Mank’á

Wild Strawberry (Fragaria spp.)

  • Mank’á is a traditional food source whose berries can be eaten raw.
  • Two species of mank’á, which are known in English as California strawberry (Fragaria vesca) and mountain strawberry (Fragaria virginiana), grow in the Tribe's ancestral homelands. Mountain strawberry is one of two species that were hybridized to create the domesticated garden strawberry.

Homodíbe mɨɨm? (Where is it?) You can find mank’á growing in the Tribal Community Garden. Look for its white flowers and red berries.

Esak’ahá daak’ábe mi c’aykɨ́ɨ? (Do you want to know more?) This webpage is part of a larger initiative to share signage highlighting plants found around the Shingle Springs Rancheria and their Nisenan names.
