MMIP Awareness Day 2024

The SSBMI Language Department provided Nisenan and Northern Sierra Miwok translations of the phrase "We have not forgotten you" for the Tribe's Missing & Murdered Indigenous People event, which appear on MMIP shirts and signage. Here, you can learn how to say these phrases.

Nisenan

Hontuymením nees mimek’é.

Miwok

Héŋŋul’aŋkɨtoknim.

About the language

In English, the word "you" is ambiguous in that it can refer to one person or to a group of people. When you say "We have not forgetten you" in English, you could be referring to one person or to a group of people (although what you intend to mean is usually clear from context).

In Nisenan and Miwok, you use different language for "you" depending on whether you are talking about one person or a group. The phrases we share here are directed towards a group of people, so you can use these phrases to honor all missing and murdered Indigenous people.
